No Homework, No Problem
At the end of the 19th century, attendance in the primary grade one through four were irregular. By the fifth grade, many students left for work and fewer students went to high school. During that time, household chores were treated with importance. Moreover, as the amount of students increasingly spent time on their homework, there was no time left to do household chores. Due to this, it started the fight over the anti-homework campaign until it was finally accepted by society in the 1990s. Other than the history of homework, what is the reason that homework was created? Back in the creation of homework, it was said that homework was created in order to extend the school learning into the home. This was used to help students better develop their skills that were taught in class. though homework is believed to have positive effects on the student’s learning, homework should be banned because of the negative effects it causes to the student such as family stress, and less time for social interaction and extra curricular activities.
The two most important reasons that homework is beneficial to students is because homework teaches responsibility by giving them a task that has to be done during their idle time and it teaches non-school lessons of time management by forcing them to divide the time that have for homework and the other things they need to do. Moreover, student’s also learn how to be responsible because they have to provide a portion of their time to do their homework or else they would have a risk of receiving a low grade or having no knowledge for the upcoming test. Responsibility is very important because this will teach the person to take responsibility for the action they did or did not do.
The other reason why homework is important is because it teaches students time management. Time management is learned only through the compilation of work that a person needs to do. This gives them stress and pressure because they need to divide their time or else they would not be able to finish the work. Moreover through learning time management, students learn to give time for the responsibilities they need in life. These responsibilities are family, friends, God, food, and homework. No doubt the positive effects of homework are greatly beneficial to a student today and the future.
Despite all the positive effects that homework has to offer, homework also has harmful effects that out weigh the benefits. The two main harmful effects of homework are family stress, and less time for social interaction and extra curricular activities. Family stress is generated because while students are doing homework, they are using up time that they have with their families. This causes unhealthy relationships between family members that escalates to family stress. As seen in the history of homework a while ago, parents are forced to drop students from school because they exert too much time for homework and less time for household chores that causes family stress back in the 19th century. The reason why homework is bad for the students is because it strips away the student’s time for social interaction and extra curricular activities. While the students are doing homework, they have less time to communicate with other people that causes a weakness or gap when communicating. Whereas communication is more important than doing homework itself. A good communicator can go somewhere in life rather than a person who is stuck up on written materials. Moreover, homework also affects the student’s extra curricular activities because they simply have no time for it. This promotes unhealthy lifestyle that are drawbacks for the student’s physical future.
Henceforth in the world today, all the students in the world experience doing homework everyday unknowingly that it will greatly affect them in a negative way. Let us work hand in hand to put a stop to this epidemic that hinder the success of this generation.
